While it may not be a common practice for everyone, parents around the world have encouraged their kids to finish their meals by telling them to eat until they see the character at the bottom of the bowl smiling at them. When they do, the kids crow back to their parents, that the character in question has smiled at them and everyone ends up smiling. Way back when it used to be Shirley or |
some such other character of the time but these days its not uncommon to get pictures of Thomas the tank engine or Bob the Builder smiling back at kids after they've spooned up the last of the oatmeal or cereal.
Materials for kids bowls have also changed. While we used to have the usual clay or porcelain bowls today's kids use melamine bowls and the like. However, unlike the smiling Shirley in its porcelain bowl, melamine bowls are a lot sturdier and tougher. Many of us can remember Shirley gradually disappearing from the bottom of the bowl through wear and tear while others will remember the Shirley bowl shattering into pieces due to a misstep or slip-up. Today's characters smiling from the bottom of their melamine bowls are relatively safe, both for the kids as well as the bowl itself. The kids of today will never have to worry about Thomas, Bob or Dora disappearing or having their smiles fade away as the image is imprinted into the resin itself.
Melamine bowls are also a lot tougher than their predecessors, making them especially ideal for drops, slips and butterfingered kids. Nine times out of ten and a melamine bowl is more likely to bounce around before coming to a halt from a fall at waist-level or even a throw against the wall. Lightweight and scratchproof, these bowls can last and last and last, provided you take certain precautions.
Despite its tough, nearly unbreakable nature, melamine is extremely weak against heat. The molecules inside the melamine resin absorb heat which cause the molecular bonds to break down. This means that after two or three times of microwaving, the melamine dish or bowl may just explode the next time you microwave it again, while heating it over an open flame is a strict no no. Therefore if you want to maintain that smile at the bottom of the bowl, don't expose your melamine bowls to any heat.
While most of you will understand that this means you shouldn't microwave them or heat them up many of us forget that hot soup or oatmeal also contain heat. Therefore if you want to maintain that smile forever (and not have to go searching for a replacement on your one and only rest day of the week), keep your melamine bowl to room temperature stuff only. This is more than enough for a bowl of cereal with milk and many others. However, if you must put in some hot oatmeal and the like, that smile won't fade but it will make the bowl weaker and more likely to break or chip. So if you must do that be sure to go get some backup bowls you can hide in the top cupboard, just in case.
